Computing and Data
STFC’s computing capabilities have grown over the years to support our need to analyse large and complex datasets arising from our core science programmes and facilities. For example the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, in which we are a partner, generates tens of petabytes of data every year. These must be analysed to produce new breakthroughs in physics, such as the discovery of the Higgs Boson. STFC’s computing capabilities across both the STFC Scientific Computing Department and the Hartree Centre can provide any type of organisation with the
expertise and support they need to develop software, tame data mountains, discern patterns in complex datasets and harness computing to improve forecasting.

Large Analytical Facilities
STFC is one of Europe’s largest multidisciplinary research organisations supporting scientists and engineers world-wide. STFC operates world leading large-scale research facilities and manages the UK access to large-scale facilities in other countries. These facilities provide a wide range of techniques and experimental scope and can therefore be utilised by users from across the UK academic research community.

The success of STFC’s research depends on the delivery of large-scale science facilities, instruments, international research partnerships and space missions that rely, in turn, on development of leading-edge technologies and expertise. STFC’s needs often go far beyond the state of the art, so off-the-shelf solutions can rarely satisfy. It would have been impossible for the Nobel Prize winning researchers to observe the gravitational waves arising from the collision of two black holes without the novel technologies developed by STFC and our partners as an integral part of our research.
