Clean Air Networks Conference 2023
The 2023 Clean Air Networks Conference was held at the University of Birmingham on the 5-6 July 2023. It both showcased the networks’ wide ranging activities and sought to identify, as a legacy for the UK Clean Air community, the next steps for both indoor and outdoor air quality research and policy. It was hosted by seven networks funded under the UK Clean Air Strategic Priority Fund, SAQN and the UKRI Clean Air Champions, and attracted over 200 delegates – from air quality researchers, to policy makers, industry partners and civic sector groups, working across the atmospheric, health, social and building science disciplines.

SAQN Annual Meeting 2022
18-19 May 2022, York
The SAQN Annual Meeting brings together Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) staff, air quality researchers, industry professionals and policy, offering excellent networking opportunities and the chance to learn more about the current and future applications of STFC capabilities to air quality issues.
Training: Introduction to Central Laser Facility
11:00 – 12:30, 8 March 2022, online
You might be surprised at the ways STFC’s Central Laser Facility (CLF) has been used in air quality research: exploring aerosol optical properties and reaction dynamics, looking at nanoparticle transport from the environment to human organs, levitating single PM2.5 liquid and solid aerosol in controlled temperature and humidity environments, imaging uptake of metals in bacteria and studying the effect of pathogens on plant cells… with such a wide range of applications, it could be the research tool you never knew you needed.
Watch the presentations and download slides on the event page.
Collaboration Building Workshop 2021
14 – 25 June 2021, online
Collaboration Building Workshops offer a space for exploration of new research ideas and the application of STFC capabilities to air quality challenges. We bring together people from different backgrounds to work together and think innovatively about challenges and solutions in air quality.
To find out more, visit our Collaboration Building Workshop page.
SAQN Annual Meeting 2021
Thursday 11 March 2021, 10.00 – 15.15, online
Our Annual Meetings are an opportunity for members to hear about network activity from the past year, and to help shape the future of the network. Presentations and slides from this year’s meeting are available on the event page.
Social Research and Air Quality: STFC, Social Sciences and SAQN
Tuesday 26th January 2021, 12.30 – 14.30, online
In this interactive, online session, we heard from social scientists researching air quality, and from STFC departments with the potential to support these types of research. Participants discussed how to work across social and physical sciences, and how to break down disciplinary barriers to enable better collaboration. A recording of the presentations and panel discussion is available on the event page, along with copies of the slides.
Training session: Using CEDA for Air Quality Research
Wednesday 20th January 2021, 10.30 – 12.30, online
A recording of this webinar is available on our event page, along with the accompanying slides. You will learn more about CEDA and JASMIN, and be taken through the process of finding and accessing relevant data and services.
Collaboration Building Workshop
2 – 13 November 2020, online
Our first Collaboration Building Workshop took place in November 2020, in an innovative online setting. Further information about the projects we funded will be added to the event page in due course. The next Collaboration Building Workshop will take place in 2021.

Collaboration Building Workshops offer a space for exploration of new research ideas and the application of STFC capabilities to air quality challenges. We want to bring together people from different backgrounds to work together and think innovatively about challenges and solutions in air quality.

Co-ordinating Research Action: COVID-19 & Air Quality
20 May 2020, 2 – 4pm, online workshop via Zoom
SAQN worked with UKIEG and AQNUK to convene an online workshop, bringing together air quality, virology, aerosol, metrology, climate, health and built environment researchers to determine the current state of knowledge on the possible interactions between air quality and COVID-19, ambient environmental conditions indoors and out, establish evidence gaps and make recommendations for a necessary rapid response and longer term research agenda.
Further details of the event, including the published Report are on the event page.
SAQN Launch Event
14 & 15 January 2020, York

Our first event of the network brought partners together to discuss opportunities for collaboration, inform the content of the network and began to identify topics for future funding calls.
The agenda has details of the topics of discussion and presentations are available to download from this page.
Our next annual meeting will be held in early 2021. To receive notification of upcoming events and funding, join the network.
